Frequently Asked Questions
What is a vector?
Vector graphics use mathematical calculations to plot points and draw connecting paths to form an image. While a raster image (JPEG, GIF, PNG, etc) might have 2000 pixels from point A to point B, a vector graphic would simply plot the two points, calculate the distance between them, and draw a line. This method of construction allows vectors to be much smaller in file size and makes them resolution independent, meaning you can scale them to any size without affecting image quality. Since vectors are defined programmatically, you can more easily edit parts of the image. The shapes and objects plotted in a vector can be manipulated, colored, and resized without any loss of quality or arduous editing.
What can vectors be used for?
Vectors are highly scalable and configurable, making them perfect for advertising, marketing, apps/websites, printing, and logos.
Where can I find free vectors?
Vecteezy has thousands of free vectors that are safe for commercial use. We also have millions of premium vectors available for Pro subscribers. Resources downloaded for free are available under the Vecteezy Free license, which requires the user to provide attribution.
What file formats do vectors come in?
Vectors typically come in AI, EPS, SVG, or PDF. All vectors on Vecteezy come in EPS format and a subset of our vectors are also available in SVG. The EPS file is the most commonly used format today because it can combine both vector and raster images on a single page. One of its main drawbacks, though, is that it doesn’t support transparency – a feature other vector file formats like SVG support.
How can I modify a vector?
There are many design programs capable of editing vector files. Adobe Illustrator is the industry standard, but you can also use software like CorelDRAW, Affinity Designer, Inkscape, and GIMP. Vecteezy also includes a JPEG format version of the vector in each download. While this format is pixel-based and therefore loses some of the inherent benefits of vector graphics, it can be edited in any image editor.
What does royalty free vector mean?
Royalty free vectors can be licensed without hiring the creator, purchasing the copyright, or paying royalties for each use. All of the content on Vecteezy is royalty free, meaning it can be used multiple times once a license is acquired without paying a fee for each use.
Can I use a vector from Vecteezy for commercial use?
Both free and Pro vectors on Vecteezy are safe for commercial use, but restrictions can apply based on how you plan to use the vector.
